Can radar level meters and radar level meters be used interchangeably?

Radar level meter is a type of instrument that uses radar waves for non-contact measurement. Similar to it are radar level meter and radar liquid level meter.


  They all use the same radar detection principle to measure the empty distance between the level interface and the instrument to infer the height of the measured medium. They are also very similar in appearance, so it is inevitable that people will have doubts about whether radar level meter can measure liquids.

  To understand whether radar level meters can measure liquids, we must first clarify the differences between the three names of liquid level meter, material level meter and material level meter. Although it seems that there is only one letter difference between the three, in fact, they are not "same level words". Liquid level meter and material level meter belong to the category of material level meter. In other words, instruments that measure liquid level and material level can be called a type of material level instrument.

  Secondly, whether the radar level meter can measure liquids, in principle it can. The radar wave is reflected on the interface of the measured medium to form a return wave. By calculating the time difference between the transmitted wave and the return wave, and then multiplying it by the speed of the radar wave, the distance between the meter and the measured interface can be obtained. This will not affect whether the measured medium is liquid or granules or powder. However, in actual use, the two meters cannot be used interchangeably for the following reasons:

  1. Parameters and measurement compensation are different

  The liquid interface is usually relatively flat and always remains horizontal, while solid particles and powder materials usually form piles below or at the feed port, and the surface is not as flat as the liquid surface. For radar level meters, the compensation parameters added when measuring the two types are naturally different. Radar level meters focus more on eliminating the value fluctuations caused by liquid surface fluctuations, while radar material level meters focus more on eliminating the messy echoes caused by the uneven material level interface.

  2. Different installation conditions

  For the measurement of the measured medium that will form a pile, the radar level meter should be installed as close to 1/5 of the pile slope as possible, because the cone volume calculation method determines that the measurement data at this time can more accurately reflect the actual volume of the measured medium in the container. The radar level meter does not have similar problems. The liquid interface always remains horizontal. As long as it avoids the influence of the container side wall and the feed port, the measurement results are the same anywhere.

  3. Different materials have different anti-interference capabilities

  For radar level meters, the working environment is usually a closed tank container, and the internal humidity, pressure and volatilization of the measured medium have a greater impact, so more consideration needs to be given to the corrosion resistance and rust resistance of the material. For radar level meters, the volatilization of the measured medium has a very low impact, and more consideration needs to be given to the impact of dust and other conditions of the measured medium on the measurement accuracy.

  In summary, radar level meter and radar liquid level meter cannot be used interchangeably. Since they deviate from their original design, they will encounter various problems in use, and the measurement accuracy and service life will also be affected. Therefore, when selecting, you should choose radar level meter or radar liquid level meter in a targeted manner.
